The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive occasions – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most dangerous, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of a few weeks, the US president commenced revealing all observers his plans for a lavish reception room two times larger of the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and this week research predicted his energy policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing major areas of the presidential residence to build a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of America's wealthiest, nearly all of which conduct transactions with federal agencies.
We transitioned from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' to 'the humble will perish from cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the traditional concept regarding democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were educated as conventional Protestant believers.
We have watched across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we grew up with into the complete reverse of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of affection into an icon of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened more gradually, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and given that the rapidly expanding group within America could have minimal awareness of him because they identify as skeptics or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; but I do think that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is decidedly not the story of a mighty king appearing; conversely, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in a storage space, who need to rapidly escape to a foreign land to escape undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine is about love for fellow humans, specifically for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but a concrete one, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. The Savior's reaction to aggression is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a way to instruct the assailant; his crime policy states that when someone steals your outer garment you should give him your sweater also.
The evident and clear reality that the Savior from scripture advocates for a form of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but owing to its inherent radicalness requiring to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Finest Among Us
Hence I have become inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been substantial consolation to assist in constructing the movement that has taken to the streets via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired citizens to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We shall require to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the finest aspects within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and welcome him or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, essentially, through connection to the highest within national tradition, similar to Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it unique and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it mean feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity never occurred; it means both humility and faith, a mixture that genuine national faithful should be comfortable with.
