The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Forged By TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
