Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a armed takeover in the ninth month and given more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.
This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of his move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a history of planning to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, Brasilia, is located around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, leading him to implement a 50% tariff on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will have a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on 1 January 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
