The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
