Roughly 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a official communication.

Police report they were alerted late on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.

Police then found numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.

Officials say initial examinations suggest the substance was likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to its source; authorities are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.

An important political figure said the incident made him without words and required to be solved promptly.

"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he stated on a platform, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
